Riga is my favorite city so far. There are many beautiful buildings, cathedrals, statues, parks, and museums. It seems less busy than the others we have visited on this trip. The people are friendly, the food is very good and reasonably priced.

We strolled through Vecriga which is the oldest section of Riga. There are many old churches and buildings. Our first stop was in Town Hall Square where we saw the Roland Statue, a mythological knight, which stands in front of the House of Blackheads. We also found the oldest homes in Riga which were built in the 1500’s called “Three Brothers”.  We visited the Freedom Monument as well as the Latvian National Opera House.

Riga used to be a walled medieval city but at the time of the Swedish rule the citizens of Riga had to pull down the city walls. We did see the Swedish Gate which is the only remaining gate. There are small sections of fortified walls that remain.  The best preserved was the Powder Tower which is now a museum.
