This is where it all began for the English criminals brought over from England. The barracks had artifacts remains from the prisoners of the barracks, even keep sakes of the prisoners. The most astonishing to me was the small criminal infractions & the long jail time served for minimal crimes. For example, steal cloth or a piece of ribbon and you get 7 years in prison. We have visited other prisons such as Port Arthur in Tasmania and they don’t seem as “prisoner friendly” as this facility. Governor Macquarie believed in reinstating reformed convicts (emancipists) to positions of authority and influence. The prisoners were able to work off their time, have families, live amongst the towns people and become citizens once they were released.
